West Berbice completed an exciting and tense one-wicket win over Georgetown in the penultimate round of the ongoing SBF Petroleum Jaguars One-Day League at the Everest Cricket Club ground, yesterday.

The day’s script saw Georgetown winning the toss and electing to bat. They were spared another woeful batting performance by Christopher Barnwell who struck a measured half-century to carry his side to 158 before they were dismissed.

The City side slipped to 77-5 after left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who took the new ball, wrecked the top order. He snatched 5-29 before Barnwell’s knock of 64 added respectability to the total. Raymond Perez (32) and Jeremiah Scott (21) were the other batsmen to feature among the runs as Nigel Deodat (2-12) and Kevin Sinclair (2-40) supported Motie’s efforts.

West Berbice in response scampered home at 159-9 with Sinclair returning to top score with 43 at the top of the innings while leg spinner Steven Sankar, who seems to be returning to his top form, nabbed 5-17 during a spell which nearly won his side a close contest.

Javed Karim (33), Leon Andrews (19) and Shimron Hetmyer (18) chipped in for the West Berbice side while Winston Forrester (2-32), Ashmead Nedd (1-23) and Barnwell (1-28) delivered useful spells.
