The housing policies of successive governments have failed young people

Dear Editor,

I write this letter for the sake of young people in this country.

The PPP/C government and now the APNU+AFC government have failed thousands of young people in the housing sector. All across Guyana, persons have been awarded house lots and because they continue to live in their parents or ancestral homes, they have built houses which are being rented, or have resold their house lots making a profit in excess of 100 per cent. This is in breach of their contracts and contrary to the policy of the government. Yet, all this took place under the former government and continues to take place under the present government. I am aware of one man who was awarded a house lot and rents a home he built on it while he continues to live with his parents and has purchased a second house lot which was awarded by the government to someone else.

Again, all of this continues to take place while there are thousands of young men and women across this country who have been waiting at least a decade for a single house lot from the PPP/C government and now the APNU+AFC government, to no avail. Apart from those who are waiting, today, this government is asking for in excess for $5,000,000 for a house lot. Assuming one is fortunate to be awarded a house lot, when will a young person working for $60,000 or $70,000 be in a position to afford to pay the government?

Yours faithfully,
