A police pickup yesterday morning crashed into two utility poles and a newly-constructed shop at Perseverance, East Coast Demerara and the driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

There were no serious injuries. A source last night told Stabroek News that investigations have revealed that the pickup, bearing registration number PWW 5435, was proceeding west along the southern lane at a fast rate when the driver said he heard a loud sound from the right side back wheel.

Seconds later, the source said, the officer lost control of the vehicle and as a result, the vehicle ended up on the northern side of the road and collided with a Guyana Power and Light lamp post and a Guyana Telephone and Telegraph post.

Before coming to a halt, the pickup crashed into a concrete shop also located on the northern side of the road. Stabroek News understands that the shop was recently constructed and was waiting to be opened.

The damage as a result of the accident is said to be extensive.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle, which is attached to the Cove and John police station’s anti-crime unit, was reportedly on patrol duties.  Two other officers were also in the patrol vehicle; none were seriously injured.
