Youth gets six weeks in jail for stealing grandma’s tablet

A woman yesterday refused to pay her 18-year-old grandson’s fine after he admitted to stealing an electronic tablet from her.

As a result, Joshua Griffith will be spending six weeks behind bars for the crime.

The charge against Griffith stated that on November 2nd, at Campbellville, Georgetown, he stole an electronic tablet valued $12,000 from Joan Samuels.

Griffith immediately admitted to the charge after it was read to him by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Two.

In an attempt to explain himself, Griffith told the court that on the day in question he went into his grandmother’s bedroom and took the tablet after which he rushed to find a buyer. He said he subsequently sold the device.

After Griffith concluded his explanation, Magistrate Daly order the teen to pay a fine of $20,000 or in default spend six weeks in prison. She then turned to Samuels and asked her if she was willing to pay the fine to secure her release. In response, an annoyed Samuels said that she would not be paying the fine.
