The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of an early morning fire which gutted a Coldingen Industrial Estate building today.

The fire is said to have started around 7am and quick action by firefighters prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings at the East Coast Demerara site.

Stabroek News understands that the building which was previously used as a bond has been unoccupied for more than a year. There was no electricity supply to the building.

Details of the owners remained unknown up to this afternoon.

Residents and workers of the area told Stabroek News that the fire started from the front of the building.

When Stabroek News visited the scene today, smoke was still emanating from the burnt remains of the building.

Most of the building was constructed with roofing sheets.

One resident, who wished not to be named said that he was alerted to the fire after hearing “cracking” sounds.

“I heard the zinc cracking then I realised it was a fire,” he said.

Meanwhile, another man who works in the area related that he and his colleagues were reporting for duty this morning when they noticed smoke coming from the building.

He said they immediately raised an alarm and the Guyana Fire Service was summoned.

They responded within 20 minutes to half an hour and put out the fire, the man added.
