Driver arrested over fatal Timehri hit and run

The driver who is allegedly responsible for last Friday’s hit-and-run accident along the Timehri, East Bank Demerara Public Road which claimed the life of security guard, Harrichan Ramsundar has been arrested by the police.

Contacted yesterday afternoon, Traffic Chief Linden Isles told Stabroek News that the driver was taken into custody on Saturday. He is presently assisting with investigations.

The minibus which he was driving at the time was also impounded, Isles said.

Ramsundar, 54, a resident of Patentia Squatting Area, West Bank Demerara sustained multiple injuries about his body, including to his head, during the accident, which occurred around 7 pm.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police had said that enquiries revealed that at the time of the accident the motor vehicle was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the road, reportedly at a fast rate, when it collided with Ramsundar, who was walking south along the western side of the road.

This newspaper was told that at the time of the accident, Ramsundar was staying at his son’s home at Timehri.

Handesh Ramsundar had said that his father left home to make a purchase at a nearby shop when he was struck.
