A Patentia Squatting Area, West Bank Demerara man is now dead after he was struck down by a driver in a hit-and-run accident on Friday evening along the Timehri, East Bank Demerara Public Road.

Dead is Harrichan Ramsundar, 54, a security guard, who had been walking along the road.

Sunday Stabroek was informed that Ramsundar suffered multiple injuries about his body, including to his head, during the accident, which occurred around 7 pm.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the unknown vehicle fled the scene after the accident.

Enquiries, the police yesterday said, revealed that at the time of the accident the motor vehicle was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the road, reportedly at a fast rate of speed, when it collided with Ramsundar, who was walking south along the western side of the road.

Sunday Stabroek understands that at the time of the accident, Ramsundar was staying at his son’s home at Timehri.

This newspaper was told that Ramsundar would spend time between his Patentia home and his son’s home.

Handesh Ramsundar said that his father left home to make a purchase at a nearby shop when he was struck.

“My father left to go to the shop to buy some bread and egg and like 6.30 time,” he said.

The shop, Handesh noted, is situated some three houses away from his home.

Handesh added that a neighbour subsequently visited and informed him that his father was involved in an accident.

As a result, he said he immediately rushed to the scene, where he saw his father lying at the corner of the road.

“Is then my neighbour start call for me and I run out and I see that he get knock down. I didn’t get to see if it was a bus or car. The body still went by the corner,” Handesh explained.

Harrichan’s body is currently at the Lyken Funeral home awaiting an autopsy, which is scheduled for some time this week.
