Fort Wellington to Bath Settlement to have streetlights

Dear Editor,

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has heard the cries of residents living along the corridor from Fort Wellington to Bath Settlement in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and wishes to inform that street lights have been confirmed for this vulnerable stretch.

A resident recently voiced his concern via a letter to Stabroek News highlighting that, “Numerous accidents have occurred over the years with vehicles colliding with animals and other vehicles on that stretch of road from Fort Wellington to Bath at nights.”

The Engineer responsible for erecting lights along the public road reported to the Ministry on Wednesday (November 13, 2019) that a request was submitted to include lights in the area which was recently approved. He added that the villages along this stretch are a few of those which are earmarked for street lights within Regions Three, Four and Five.

According to him, the installation of those lights from Fort Wellington to Bath Settlement could commence before the end of this year as the lights have already been procured.

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure would also like to advise commuters, especially those who traverse the Leguan Stelling on the Essequibo River, Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) that the contractor responsible for the rehabilitation is scheduled to recommence works by next week.

It was reported to the Ministry that persons using the Stelling would be afraid to do so due to its current deplorable state. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused and assure that the facility will be upgraded to the required standard soon.

Works were indeed put on a standstill to iron out technical matters which have already been resolved, as was highlighted in a report published by the Guyana Chronicle on October 30, 2019. Against this backdrop we note with pleasure that the contractor is currently being mobilized and works are expected to resume within a few days.

Yours faithfully,

Davina Ramdass,

Public Relations Officer,

Ministry of Public
