Cop dies in Brickdam accident

A police constable died after his motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of Brickdam and Chalmers Place during the wee hours of yesterday.

Dead is police constable 22322 Carl Roach, 24, of Lot 1 Water Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara.

Roach who was attached to the Brickdam Police Station died on the spot.

Motorcycle, CH 9436 which Carl Roach was riding at the time of the accident.

Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday confirmed the accident which occurred around 00.30hrs.

He said the driver of motorcar, PMM 2528,  a 34-year-old female resident of Norton and Haley streets, Wortmanville is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

The police in a press statement issued yesterday said that at the time of the accident, Constable Roach was proceeding west along the southern side of Brickdam while motor car, PMM 2528 was proceeding east along the northern side of the said road.

“….As both vehicles approached Chalmers Place … the driver of (the) motor car reportedly turned south into the path of (the) motorcycle and a collision occurred,” the statement noted.

As a result of the collision, the police said Roach was flung some distance and hit a light pole on the southern side of the road.

He sustained severe injuries about his body including his head and was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.

The force in the statement yesterday extended condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Constable Roach.

Roach was described as a dedicated member of the force.

As the news of his death spread, many expressed shock on social media site, Facebook.
