Were Seon Bobb and his family offered witness protection?

Dear Editor,

Within the space of a few weeks, we have seen the main witnesses in two separate murders brutally killed. The first was Collin Rodney, whose burnt remains were found in the trunk of a torched car on November 1, 2019, at Letter T, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. Soon after this incident Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Public Security publicly announced that the police would seek to place other witnesses in Government’s Witness Protection Programme (see article titled “Burnt body in car trunk…Witness protection for others giving evidence in murder trial …as case resumes today”, Kaieteur News, November 4, 2019). Exactly 19 days after the announcement by Mr. Ramjattan, I read with utter disgust that Seon Bobb was gunned down at Agricola. He was the key witness in the murder of 34-year old Kacey Da Silva on December 20, 2018, at Agricola.

My questions to the Minister of Public Security are:

1.  What progress was made concerning the placement of witnesses in the Government’s Witness Protection Programme since his public pronouncement this month?

2.  Were Seon Bobb and his family offered any protection?

I am profoundly happy that Mr. Ramjattan made progress in his quest to become the Prime Ministerial candidate in the APNU+AFC coalition team. Moreover, I am also proud of Mr. Ramjattan for taking time out of his busy schedule to provide the nation with details of his success at securing the nomination for the Prime Ministerial slot. As an elated and grateful citizen, however, I would be happier if the Minister can give answers to the questions above, once it does not distract him from the fight against crime in our country.

As I await Mr. Ramjattan’s response, I wish to publicly declare that our country has never been safer since he took over as the Minister of Public Security, as evidenced by the ‘declining’ crime rate. If it weren’t for the prison fires as well as overpriced drones and Mazaruni prison, he would go down in our history as the most successful Minister of Home Affairs/Minister of Public Security.

Yours faithfully,
