Beterverwagting (BV) and Mahaica earned identical 1-0 victories when the inaugural ‘592 Beer Inter-Village Football Festival’ continued on Sunday at the Golden Grove Community Centre ground.
The large gathering which descended on the venue, departed the facility disappointed, as the visiting unit BV secured a hard fought result over hosts Golden Grove.
The bruising affair was decided by defender Jermin Somerset in the 62nd minute, following a scoreless first half period.
It was somewhat of a fortuitous conversion, as an initial header following a right-sided corner-kick was parried into his onrushing path, allowing the player to chest the ball into the back of the net.
Meanwhile Mahaica defeated Plaisance in the opening match. Azuma Roberts was the difference as he netted a brilliant goal in the 27th minute.
Racing into the centre of the penalty box, Roberts unleashed a diving header which settled into the left corner, after receiving a perfectly weighted left side cross.
The event resumes on Friday at the Buxton ground. The opening match at 19:00hrs will pit BV against Annandale while Friendship battle Victoria from 21:00hrs in the feature encounter.
On Sunday at the same venue, Brushe Dam opposes Ann’s Grove at 19:00hrs while the feature matchup will witness Mahaica engaging Buxton from 21:00hrs.
The event features 12 teams battling in an initial group format. Group-A comprises Buxton, Plaisance and Mahaica, with group-B consisting of Friendship, Paradise and Victoria and group-C featuring Brush Dam, Melanie and Ann’s Grove.
Group-D contains Annandale, Golden Grove and Beterverwagting [BV]. The winner of each group will advance to the semi-final round. The grand finale is pegged for December 14th.
Winner of the event will pocket $300,000 and the championship trophy, with the second, third and fourth place finisher collecting $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
Individual prizes will also be awarded for the Most Valuable Player [MVP] and the Best Goalkeeper.
Among the other sponsors of the event are Bakewell Guyana Incorporated, ExxonMobil, and the Colin Talbot Construction Services.
