Camille Devi, who police claim was found trying to traffic just over 10 pounds of cannabis, was remanded to prison yesterday.

Devi, 24, of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where she was read a trafficking charge by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus. It is alleged that on November 26th, at First Avenue, Bartica, Devi had 4.544 kilogrammes (10.018 pounds) of marijuana in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Devi, who was represented by attorney-at-law Stanley Moore, denied the charge. Moments later, Moore told the court that his client was one of the 21 passengers who were on a vessel at Bartica. He added that a search was conducted on Devi and nothing was found on her. However, when she was getting off the vessel, he said, the bowman told her to pick up “the box” she was leaving. He further noted that his client did not have a box. He also maintained that his client denied the allegation.

After listening to Moore, the magistrate remanded Devi until December 28th.
