A 19-year-old labourer was yesterday released on $100,000 bail after he was charged with attempting to kill Hansraj Durga during an argument at a wedding house at Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara more than three weeks ago.

Jermain Holder, of Virginia Village, Cane Grove, appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittelhozer at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

After he was granted bail, the matter was adjourned until December 17th for statements.

An attack around 10pm on November 3rd has left Durga, called ‘Kevin’, 22, also of Cane Grove, paralysed on the right side of his body from his shoulder down.

Stabroek News had previously reported that Durga had gone to a wedding house, located a street away from his home, where he reportedly got into an argument with several men and was beaten.

The origin of his attack remains unknown. At the time of the beating, Durga is said to have been intoxicated.

He was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital and was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

A CT Scan showed that Durga suffered a fractured skull with internal bleeding in addition to a dislocated right shoulder, a punctured left shoulder and other injuries to his mouth and about his body.
