A city magistrate on Tuesday referred a narcotics possession accused to the Drug Court after he admitted to smoking a “joint” every week.

Earl DeSouza, who was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, was told that the charge against him would be heard in the new court after his admission.

This was after he admitted to having 10 grammes of marijuana in his possession on November 23rd at First Avenue, Bartica. According to the police prosecutor, the police were conducting a search on a passenger at the stelling at First Avenue, Bartica, when they noticed DeSouza acting in a suspicious manner. It was reported that he was trying to remove the narcotic from his crotch.

Police eventually approached him and conducted a search and found the marijuana, which led to his arrest. The police also said that he did not deny the allegation when he was taken to the Bartica Police Station.

DeSouza responded to the prosecutor’s information by telling the magistrate that he was going to the interior to work and that he smokes a “joint” on a weekly basis.

With this information, the magistrate deliberated between ordering him to do community service and transferring the matter to the drug court. She decided on the latter course and transferred the case.
