A 25-year-old father of one is now dead following a fatal accident yesterday morning along the Leonora Public Road, where the vehicle he was driving toppled after he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

Riley Newton, of Lot 76, Third Street, Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he and two friends who were with him were taken after the accident.

The accident occurred around 5 am.

According to the Regional Commander of Region Three, Simon McBean, Newton was travelling with two friends, Monesh Gopie and Joseph Ramjon, west along the Leonora Public Road as they were proceeding to Parika. He is reported to have fallen asleep while driving. McBean said the car subsequently ran off the road in the southern direction and turned-turtle.

He added that Gopie and Ramjon were treated for the injuries they suffered and later discharged.

McBean said that while a post-mortem examination was not done as yet, based on the investigations of police thus far Newton suffered a broken right arm and head injuries along with other multiple injuries about his body.

Newton was an employee of the Republic Bank Vreed-en-Hoop branch.
