A man was jailed on Friday for three years after he pleaded guilty to maliciously wounding his ex-fiancée.

Thirty-year-old Gary Beckles of Lot 23 Hill Street, Albouystown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court when he was read two charges.

The first charge stated that on October 25, 2019, at Sussex Street, Charlestown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Brittany Dover.

It was further alleged that on November 26, 2019, at Hill Street, Albouystown, he made use of threatening language towards Dover. The unrepresented labourer pleaded guilty to both charges.

Police Prosecutor, Sanj Singh presented the facts to the court. He informed that Beckles and the virtual complainant were engaged to be married. However, due to the man frequently abusing her, she ended the relationship.

The court also heard that the defendant, after the relationship ended, would still attempt to contact the woman and would not to leave her alone. According to the facts, the man would often make threats against her life. One of them being that that he had spent five years in prison for a similar offence and was not afraid to go back.

On the day in question, October 25th, Beckles saw the victim walking on Sussex Street, Charlestown, on her way to work and attacked her from behind.

The court heard that after the woman was pushed to the ground, Beckles dealt her several kicks to her face causing her to suffer lacerations about her forehead, face and lips. She also suffered swelling to the left side of her forehead.

It was also reported that on November 26th, the defendant saw the complainant standing on Hill Street, Albouystown and he pulled out a firearm and was walking towards her as he threatened to kill her. The woman became fearful for her life and went to the Ruimveldt Police Station and reported the matter. The matter was investigated and the defendant was arrested and charged with the offence.

After listening to the facts, Magistrate Daley sentenced Beckles to three years in jail for the unlawful wounding and two weeks on the threatening language charge.
