Prisoner found dead in Suddie station lock-up

The police have launched an investigation into the death of a prisoner at the Suddie Police Station lock-up. 

The dead man has been identified as Steffon Smith, 25, also known as ‘Blacka’ and ‘Black Boy,’ of 23 Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, Berbice. 

Police, in a statement, said Smith, a remanded prisoner who was awaiting transferal to Georgetown Prison, was discovered yesterday around 10.40 am, hanging in his cell with a multi-coloured sheet tied around his neck from the ventilation grill. He had attended court on Wednesday and was further remanded until January 8th, 2020. 

His body is at Suddie Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is to be done.

Smith was seen by a psychiatrist on Monday to ascertain if he was of mentally sound mind to stand trial at the Suddie Supreme Court. 

He had been remanded on charges of attempted murder and wounding with intent committed on Michael Marco, 28, during an altercation that occurred Konawaruk backdam, Region Eight, on January 26th, 2016.
