The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has announced plans to repair/upgrade roads in several villages and housing scheme across the country. This is good news for residents who are living in those housing areas. I have noticed with concern and disappointment that roads in Land of Canaan have not been included on the list of roads to be repaired. This scheme is located opposite the Falls’ Gas Station on the East Bank of Demerara and has one main road running east to west and three minor roads running north to south. All these roads are in dire needs of repairs. The potholes have now developed into swimming pools and with the present rainfall, these pools are filled to capacity. So bad are these roads that residents who have vehicles, especially mini-buses, have to park those vehicles at the Falls’ Gas Station.
During the term in office of the past government (now opposition), a short stretch of the main road was paved.
This stretch of road ends at the entrance of a resident who was one of their supporters and where party meetings were held. There is an official who works with the Ministry of Communities who lived in this area and has knowledge of the road network in this scheme. Some time back, that official paid a visit to the area and was convinced that the roads are indeed in need of repairs. He promised to have this road included on the schedule of road repairs. To date, I have not seen any repairs done to these roads nor have I seen that official again. What should be noted here is that all the village roads from Friendship to Pearl have been repaired except the road in the Land of Canaan scheme.
I am therefore, on behalf of the residents of this housing scheme, asking that repairs be done as a matter of urgency to these roads.
