Man ordered to pay $100,000 compensation for drunken assault

A man has been ordered to compensate a friend $100,000 or serve two months in jail after committing a drunken assault.

Wayne Fernandes appeared before Senior Magistrate Leon Daily on Monday and admitted that he was stressed and drunk at the time that he dealt John Knight several punches to the mouth.

The resulting charge laid against Fernandes stated that on December 10th, 2019, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Knight.

According to the Police Prosecutor, the two men, who are known to each other, had a misunderstanding. The court heard that Fernandes was cursing at Knight’s relatives. When Knight approached and told Fernandes to leave, the man did not oblige. Instead, he punched Knight and he fell. As a result of the fall, Knight suffered several lacerations and a busted lip.

Fernandes told the court that he had been drinking and after a very stressful month, Knight had further upset him.

The magistrate after listening to the man told him that he would have to compensate Knight $100,000 or spend an alternative of two months in prison.
