As part of their community enhancement drive, the recently formed Century Palm Gardens Community Project in the D’Urban Backlands area has posted a number of signs in their neighbourhood.

According to a Century Palm Gardens Community Project release, the signs include a welcome sign for the Red Cross Convalescent Home and at the entrance from Hadfield Street and for the first time, Conservancy Drive, Lama Drive and Samaan Drive have posted street signs.

Witnessing the occasion were the Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine, along with Councillors Shonelle Smith-Daniels and Dr Dawn Stewart-Lyken from the M&CC, Trevor Benn, Commissioner of Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission along with Human Resources Manager Shonda Williams and Chief Coordinator for the project Gem Madhoo-Nascimento as well as area residents.

The Mayor expressed his satisfaction that the community had taken the initiative to develop their environment and urged other communities to take similar action as the Council does not have the finance to make improvements which are readily needed.

The community group is organised by a team of coordinators headed by Madhoo-Nascimento and includes Jeanette Thomas, Dee George, Timothy McIntosh, Sharon Small, Sean Bola, Richard Layne and Manowar Khan.

The purpose of the group is to bring the community together using a WhatsApp chat group so residents are in tune with what’s happening at all times and are able to look out for each other. Other objectives of the community are to work with the relevant authorities to upgrade the roads, street lights and drainage.  Emphasis has been placed on enhanced security, maintaining the environment and urging residents to be more responsible for their immediate surroundings.

These signs were sponsored by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, Zip Logistics, Demerara Mutual Life Insurance, Dagron Tours, Eureka Medical Laboratory and Choo’s Tropical Products, the release added.
