The Rotary Club of Georgetown Central and the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central collaborated just over a week ago to provide over 100 families in Plastic City, Vreed-en-Hoop, with food hampers for the Christmas season.
Members and volunteers set out early on the morning of Saturday, December 14th, to give out hampers full of essential food stuff, such as rice, flour, oil and a variety of canned and dry foods, to residents. Some 450 are estimated to have benefitted from the donation.
The Vreed-en-Hoop Community High School served as the distribution centre, where persons could be seen waiting in an orderly fashion with their tickets, which they received earlier in the morning from the Clubs. A representative from each household was given a hamper full of the food stuff.
Some of the recipients of the hampers said the Rotary Club was doing a good deed for the residents and they were very thankful for the contributions to their household. However, some raised concerns about their neighbours who were too ill or too busy to make it to the distribution. A representative from the Rotary Club informed that during the distribution of tickets, they made a count of all the persons who could not make it and would be going to their homes after they were finished with distribution at the school to give hampers to those who could not walk to the site.
Each hamper, the representative said, was valued $8,000 or more. Some of the businesses which made donations to the initiative, dubbed “Hampers for the Holidays,” were the Pomeroon Oil Mill, Real Value Supermarket, Sueria Manufacturing, Ramps Logistics, Toucan Industry, Massy Distributors, Sterling, the Institute of Private Enterprise Development (IPED), Guybisco, N&S Mattai and Company, JR Ranch Inc., Banks DIH Limited, Edward B. Beharry and Company, Demerara Distillers Limited, KP Thomas and Sons, National Hardware and Guyana Logistics & Support Services.
