Over 20 Region Two schools to be rehabilitated

More than 20 Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) schools are set to undergo rehabilitation, to create improved learning environments for learners and educators on the Essequibo Coast.

The disclosure was made during a government outreach on Wednesday, when Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, told those congregated at the 8th of May Secondary School at Dartmouth Village of the scheduled works. A Department of Public Information release related that the schools will be subject to a range of infrastructural upgrades, including extensions, new laboratories, and the construction of entirely new buildings.

The minister highlighted to residents that this is the first time in history that such a significant portion of the country’s budget—20%— has been dedicated to the education sector. Furthermore, she reiterated that education is an investment, and that learners are agents of change for Guyana, the reason government needs to support development for all.

Residents at the outreach had raised concerns over the condition of classrooms and transportation to access the institutions, particularly for those travelling from the Pomeroon River.
