Traffic encroachment at Eping Ave and Vlissengen

Dear Editor,

My observation is with regards to the recent “normal” and “acceptable” road usage policy at the junction of Eping Avenue and Vlissengen Road. It aches me to know that with the establishment of a popular fast food chain (KFC) at the said corner, customers of their drive-through facility have started to accumulate in the southern lane which usually facilitates traffic merging into Vlissengen. This of course leads to massive confusion with incoming traffic and it has become apparent that it either is now accepted as normal or maybe our culture of keeping issues to ourselves and leaving it for activists to deal with remains the same.

My opinion is that whilst in true Guyanese spirit, we like to use the phrase “the man just trying to make a dollar”  makes it ok to affect the social well-being of others, I wish to share the issue which caused me to speak up. I recall for Mashramani celebrations 2017, this fast food joint manufactured a special “ reinforced cage” from reserve to fence to ensure that our good Guyanese revelers could be controlled and kept out whilst their valued customers could enjoy a safe and pleasant experience inside the reinforced wall. This selfish act shows the gross disrespect and disregard to the very same users of the road whom they disenfranchise for the remaining 364 days of the year.

This is not an attempt to complain or criticize but rather an opinion as to why “we” never get better in our country.

Thanks again Editor and I  hope that we gain more confidence in doing the right things for the future.

Yours faithfully,

L. Evans
