High time for our leaders to sit down and find a modus vivendi

Dear Editor,

I believe that every patriot ought to be saddened and sorry about statements emanating from certain persons in the media.

First, on the question of the deeper social and constitutional issues I have proffered that the solution lies in the settlement of our grave political, and whether we like it or not, racial problem.

To this end, I made an appeal to the leadership of the two major and oldest political parties to consider a National Front Government with certain conditions.

It is my view that at this stage of our development we need the likes of David Granger and Bharrat Jagdeo to be like two horses sprinting together carrying the wagon of Guyana to victory and a safe haven.

Stubborn, locked horns will benefit no one in the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

I feel compelled to make a comment after listening to the latest remarks of my good friend and Leader of the PPP, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo seeking the intervention of the Carter Center and being critical if not cynical about geriatrics.

First, in local parlance, a geriatric refers to someone who is physically feeble and mentally not alert.

It no longer refers to the chronological state of an individual.

They say age is but a number.

Beyond this, I am surprised that those who have traditionally been suspicious of and more particularly are deep down anti American are seeking the intervention of the US.

So here, we have a conundrum and an absurdity of Guyanese politicians seeking the intervention of the Carter Center headed by, using their terms, a geriatric from the deep south of the United States of America.

Those who know US history and the genesis of the American Civil War will understand what I mean in reference to the deep south.

In the pre-1992 election period, I urged the then Government Leader to find an accommodation with the PPP and avoid what I hated, which is, the intervention and intimate involvement in our electoral process by persons who are alien to our culture, fears and aspirations.

Unhappily, the then President did not listen.

Let me make it clear that I have the highest regard, respect and affection for the United States of America, a country that has moved from the Jim Crow days through the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King and President Barack Hussein Obama.

The hallmark of a nation and a people capable of learning and accommodating.

As we approach the 49th year of our Republican status, it is high time for our Leaders to demonstrate a true love for Guyana and sit down and find a modus vivendi so that we can bequeath to our children and their children a Guyana that is blessed, Good, Green Glorious and Prosperous.

Yours faithfully,

Hamilton Green
