A brilliant all-round effort by skipper Dwayne Adams single-handedly propelled host Everest over the defending champions the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) by 16 runs in Saturday’s lone New Building Society (NBS) second division 40-overs tournament.

Everest, after winning the toss and electing to bat, were dismissed for 168 in 35 overs. Adams top-scored with an innings of 52 inclusive of four fours and five maximums.  He got support from regional first-class player Amir Khan (38) and Kamesh Yadram (25) as leg spinner Steven Sankar snared 3-24 to continue his excellent form for DCC. Totaram Bishun (2-34) was also among the wickets.

DCC in response, never got the innings going and were stifled by a barrage of spinners from the host and were eventually bundled out for 152 in 38.5 overs.

Adams backed up his fine innings with the bat to grab 3-31 from his compliment of eight overs to mute DCC’s powerful batting lineup. Off-spinner Richie Looknaught (3-12) produced a tidy spell with the ball while Travis Persaud (2-30) and Javed Rasheed (1-21) also contributed to the win.

Only former West Indies player Derwin Christian (31) and Raymond Perez (23) displayed any fight for the defending champions who were caught napping.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated contest between the University of Guyana (UG) and the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) had to be cancelled for the second weekend running. While last week’s match was interrupted by the rain, a source revealed to this publication that UG’s participation was affected because of the forced closure of the campus due to recent unfortunate bomb scares which rocked the institution.
