UG Trojans teams win and lose in GABA knockout tourney

Pepsi Sonics defeated the University of Guyana [UG] Trojans 70-62 in their first division clash when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association [GABA]/’Lets Bet Sports’ Knockout Championship commenced Friday.

Witnessed by a surprisingly large group of spectators at the Burnham Court, Middle and Carmichael Streets, Jason Squires led the way for the Mandela Avenue outfit with a game-high 25 points.

He was assisted by the underrated Earl O’Neil, scorer of 19 points. On the other side, D. Williams scored 11 points, with J. Joseph and S. Eversley netting 10 points apiece.

The next best scorer with nine points was J. Mangra. Meanwhile in the reverse of the aforementioned matchup, UG Trojans downed Pepsi Sonics 80-62 in the U23 division.

Kadeem Peterkin amassed 33 points with J. Browne and J. Browne adding 12 points each. For the losers, C. Stephens top scored with 11 points while S. Joseph and T. Glasgow tallied 10 and seven points respectively.

Also recording a win in the U23 section was Eagles, who gained a walkover from Kobras. Up to press time, the second round of matches in the U23 section was underway.

The first match was set to pit Pacesetters against UG Trojans clash while Plaisance Guardians was programmed to battle Eagles in the second match.

The winners will advance to the final today at the same venue from 20:30hrs, with the losers battling in the third place playoff at 18:30hrs.

The event which is sponsored by the Guyana Lottery Company, continues on March 19th at the same venue with the commencement of the second and first divisions respectively.

The second division tournament will feature five teams competing in a single elimination tournament. The opening match will pit Sonics against Vikings.

The victor of the clash will advance to the semi-final round, alongside the trio of Guardians, Pacesetters and Eagles.

Similarly, the first division will commence with Sonics battling UG Trojans. The aforesaid section will feature eight teams and will last for the duration of seven days.
