Conquerors, GDF lock horns tonight in Super16 grand finale

The Georgetown Football Club [GFC] will come alive this evening when National champion Fruta Conquerors lock horns with the Guyana Defence Force [GDF] in the final of the Guyana Football Federation [GFF] year-end football tournament from 22:00hrs.

The Tucville based giant sealed their place in the final after besting Santos 2-1 in extra time. On the other hand, the army unit battled past fierce rival the Guyana Police Force [GPF] 4-2 in their semi-final engagement.

Fruta Conquerors have been efficient in their three-match campaign thus far, recording 10 goals while only conceding once, cementing their status as the event’s favourite. Their other victories to date include 4-0 results over Milerock and Buxton Stars respectively.

The responsibility of securing the title will once again fall on the shoulders of the talented core of Vurlon Mills, Quincy Adams, Jahaal Greaves, Delon Lanferman, Ryan Hackett and Eon Alleyne.

On the other hand, GDF have taken a battle tested route to the championship match. In terms of the numbers, the army side has tallied 11 goals while conceding three times. Their victories have come against Mainstay Stars via a 5-0 score and a hard-fought 2-1 win over Buxton United.

While the task ahead will be difficult, another stellar performance will be required from the likes of Benjamin Opara, Olvis Mitchell. Sherwin Caesar, Delwin Fraser and Colin Nelson if they are to lift the coveted title.

Meanwhile, the third place playoff will feature GPF against Santos from 19:00hrs. Winner of the overall tournament will collect two million dollars and the championship trophy, with the losing finalist pocketing one million. The third and fourth place finishers will receive $500,000 and $250,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
