Please permit the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MoPI) to respond to a letter published by Stabroek News in the Tuesday, 14th January, 2020 edition which was written by a concerned resident with regards to the Linden to Mabura road.
The Ministry would like to affirm the writer’s remarks that contracts were indeed signed for the maintenance of this road. Given the special nature of the carriageway, in that, heavy laden trucks usually traverse this section for the purpose of transporting timber, among others for Natural Resources purposes, the MoPI has partnered with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), an arm of the Ministry of Natural Resources to assist in the maintenance of the road.
An assessment of the condition of the road is being carried out which will guide the way for the maintenance work which resumes today. So far, the contractor has confirmed that sections of the road have deteriorated during the rainy season in December. This resulted in water lodging and further weakening the carriageway.
To address this, the contractor has readily opted to commence maintenance works which will see the situation being rectified in a few days.
In December last, the private contractor who had conducted maintenance works on the specific corridor for the period 2018 to November 2019 was reassigned to undertake the works. His new contract will conclude at the end of this year.
The Ministry would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused to commuters during this time and reiterate, that our team is dedicated towards the development and enhancement of all our roadways.
