National Table Tennis (TT) player Miguel Wong continues to fortify his development in Germany after he extended his stay to participate in another training camp and to get an opportunity to play professionally.

During the latter part of 2019, Wong departed Guyana for a three-month training camp in Berlin, Germany. He was due to return in December, however, scouts laid eyes on his craft and the young man was given the opportunity to stay on to further realise his dreams.

“I’m only here to attend a five-day camp at Top Spin Tischtennis Centre,” the 19-year-old told Stabroek Sport during a brief interview yesterday.

The Titans Table Tennis Club player explained that he was invited to attend the camp after the centre’s coach Thomas Wetzel saw video clippings of him.

“It’s a great feeling being here in these environments as an athlete. The coach and all the other players are very friendly and competitive.”

He added, “I will be coached by Thomas Wetzel while playing with other higher-level players from Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Bolivia, Germany, Cuba, Dominica Republic, Puerto Rico, and Germany. All on the national team for their respective countries.”

Following his departure in 2019, Wong had said that his talent was finally being recognised and hinted at going after any opportunity to play professionally in Europe and yesterday he confirmed his acceptance to play for SSV 90 Landsburg in the German League.

“This camp will be beneficial for me going into the German Open (where he’ll represent Guyana) in January 27- February 2 and the Portugal Open in February 12-16.”

The young man said he is highly appreciative of the contributions from sponsors Brian Sukhail of Power Producers and Distributors, Beacon Café, Kings Jewellery, Titans Table Tennis Club, Ready Mix Cement and the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) for funding his trip.
