(Trinidad Express) Police have detained two men in connection with the killing of Freeport business analyst Charan Singh, who was shot and killed during a botched robbery on Wednesday night.

The suspects, who are from Freeport, were detained hours after the incident

Singh, 24, a business analyst, was standing next to his father, Matura Singh, a retired superintendent of police, when thieves held them at gunpoint in the yard of a neighbour at Chickland Main Road.

As the gunman fired at the father and son and the neighbours, Singh was shot three times to the chest.

The killers left with nothing, and Singh died while receiving emergency medical treatment at hospital.

Funeral arrangements are being made for Saturday at 9 a.m. at his home at San Francisco Lands Settlement.

The body will be interred at the Waterloo Cremation Site.

The Express was told on Wednesday night shortly after 8 p.m. a man scaled the fence of the property of one of their neighbour’s, who owns a mini mart.

The man stripped off his clothing and walked around the yard, then left.

The neighbour called Singh on the phone and asked him to come over to view the footage from the security cameras, to identify the man.

Matura Singh was watching television, and when he saw his son leaving, he decided to walk over to the neighbour’s with him.

After viewing the footage, they identified the intruder as a man from the village who was recently released from prison for larceny.

The father and son, the neighbour and a few other people were standing in the yard when a relative of the neighbour’s opened the gate and parked his Toyota Corolla in the driveway.

Two men ran into the yard, and one of them pointed a firearm and demanded the keys to the car.

The armed man then fired several shots, which struck Singh to the chest.

None of the other victims were harmed.

The men ran out and got into a blue or black car waiting down the street for them.

Singh died while being treated at the Couva District Health Facility.
