Makeup artist Christine Deobarran prefers to enhance, rather than transform

A once-aspiring nurse, Christine Deobarran found her niche in makeup artistry three years ago and knew it was meant to be. Since then, she has done the faces of many brides and models and is one of the go-to makeup artists for that ideal look.

“I’ve always had a passion about enhancing beauty and would always be complimented on my makeup. One day, I tried makeup on a friend. We were just playing around with makeup and many persons complimented my work. This inspired me to take up makeup artistry,” Christine said.

Though it was not until she finished school that she began dabbling, Christine’s fascination with makeup began a long time before. The second of two girls, growing up, she was always in awe of her mother wearing makeup. Then when she was a bit older, she would sneakily apply her mother’s makeup to her face whenever her mother was out of the house. This landed her in trouble whenever she was caught but never in enough ‘hot water’ to make her change her mind.

Most of her girlhood days, however, found her among the boys in her community engaging in football and other sports.

While a student of the Business School, she worked her way into the science stream as she had intentions of becoming a nurse. However, as time progressed Christine realised that she could not see herself doing it for the rest of her life. Sometime after she finished school, when she did realize what her passion was, she decided to make a career out of it. Her journey began with two eye shadow pallets and three lipsticks. Christine would save her allowances which allowed her to purchase more makeup as time went by. Three years on, she lugs around a makeup kit filled to the brim.

Although she is self-taught, Christine has spent countless hours watching makeup tutorials on YouTube that aided her in perfecting her skill. In addition, her short stay at Le Cosmetiques By Niketa, where she was employed, also allowed her the exposure she needed. Christine shared that much of her inspirations came from celebrity makeup artists who hosted YouTube shows like Makeup by Mario, Makeup by Ariel and Amrezy.

Christine’s work leans more to a subtle look as she only intends to enhance her client’s beauty and not transform her into something else. She said her aim is to have clients look like themselves as much as possible, so she works with more neutral, earth tone colours and glitters. However, she is not to be underestimated as she can certainly do daring and extravagant looks if the client so wishes.

Since choosing this path, she has enjoyed meeting new people, getting to know them, sharing life stories and enhancing their beauty. “The best part about my job is seeing how excited my clients get after I’m done. Also, when I’m applying makeup on my clients, we share a lot of ourselves. Some brides would confide about having second thoughts about the man they planned on spending the rest of their life with. For others it may be the thought of having to go live with in-laws,” she said.

Some of the difficulties she has experienced include punctuality and last-minute cancellations. She has also had clients not show up at all without informing her. In the cases of brides, very few are punctual especially those of the Hindu faith who have to spend a long time getting the dye off themselves.

Asked to share a story that taught her lesson, she said, “There was this one time I was doing a bride’s makeup and she was in a hurry because she was late. While I was spraying on the setting spray, she opened her eyes and it went into her eyes. This was really earlier in my profession. I was at fault because I didn’t tell her to keep her eyes closed but I learnt from this.”

She shared too that when she had just taken up makeup artistry, her family was not totally supportive but in time they came around. Reflecting on this she encourages aspiring young women to always follow their dreams and the people who love and care about them will indeed come around. In addition, Christine said that that while things may seem hard at first, perseverance pays and one who is determined will make mountains move. If anything, she hopes that not only does she leave a legacy behind of someone who was always kind but someone who fulfilled her heart’s desire.

For the time being she has no place for clients to visit but she hopes to in the future. In fact, she intends to have her business at several different locations around the country.

In her free time, she watches tutorials, her favourite Netflix series “Lucifer” and goes to the gym. She also enjoys hanging out with friends and playing tennis.

Her favourite dishes are fried rice, and any kind of curry.

This Taurus loves the colour red.
