Businessman charged with murders of Linden couple

A 48-year-old businessman was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murders of Imogene Gordon and Royston John, the Linden couple who were fatally stabbed last Wednesday at Wismar, Linden.

Maxwell Usher, a resident of Prosville Housing Scheme, Wismar, Linden, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.

The matter was adjourn-ed until April 20.

Police discovered the bodies of 49-year-old Gordon of Lot 117 Pros-ville Housing Scheme, Wismar, Linden and John, 43, also of Prosville Hous-ing Scheme and Kildonan Village, Corentyne, Ber-bice, at about 8.35pm last Wednesday at the entrance of Gordon’s residence.

Their bodies bore multiple stab wounds. They were both pronounced dead on arrival at the Linden Hospital.

Autopsies conducted on Friday confirmed that the couple died as a result of multiple incised.

Usher, who previously shared a relationship with Gordon and had threatened to sever her hands, was caught a short distance away from the scene.

He was treated at the Linden Hospital for a gaping wound to his right hand and subsequently taken into police custody.

Regional Commander Superintendent Hugh Winter previously told Stabroek News that a neighbour heard strange noises coming from Gordon’s residence. As a result, she called the woman’s phone and after her phone rang out, she then called the police, who discovered the bodies.

A family friend of Gordon, who wished not to be named, had said that Gordon returned from Trinidad and Tobago four years ago and began a relationship with Usher.

The woman described their relationship as “rocky,” while noting that the two were “on and off” for more than a year. It was after they called it quits that Gordon got involved with John, with whom she was in a common-law relationship.

She had added that despite their break-up, Usher stalked Gordon. The family friend related that Gordon tried to put a stop to it by reporting Usher to the police after he threatened to sever her hands on March 10. A week prior to the killings, Usher was placed on a six-month bond to keep the peace but was heard telling police officers that the bond would not prevent him from seeing Gordon.

Gordon shared six children with her estranged husband, who lives abroad with them. The two parted ways more than a decade ago.
