Guyanese political activist dies of COVID-19 in the US

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has claimed the life of a Guyanese political activist in the United States.

Marvin Pearce, 44, an activist and supporter of APNU+AFC died on Monday and was said to have tested positive for the disease not long ago and as a result he was subsequently hospitalized, according to social media posts, at the intensive care unit. His condition then deteriorated and he passed away.

Following his death, a number of tributes and posts were seen on Pearce’s social media timeline, where persons remembered him as a devoted member of Guyana’s pageant industry for his time working with the Simpli Royal School of Beauty.  His death came as a shock to many party supporters who all expressed their shock and sadness through social media.

Pearce was remembered as outspoken, passionate, a fierce debater, kind and someone who fought for the betterment of his home country, by friends and relatives who all took to the social media platform, Facebook to share memories. Tributes were seen from close friends, former Georgetown Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green and former Miss Universe Guyana Soyini Fraser.

Stabroek News was unable to contact immediate family members of Pearce who had taken some time off of social media. In his last post, dated April 2nd, 2020, he said “Today I am making the hardest decision to remove myself from social media until that manmade virus is over may God keep us safe”.
