CAUGHT: Joseph Fifee

An East Coast Demerara man was yesterday arrested after he was caught trying to smuggle a parcel containing contraband items into the Lusignan Prison.

Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels confirmed that Joseph Fifee was apprehended around 4.05 pm yesterday.

In a brief press statement, Samuels said a quick response by members of the Lusignan Prison Task Force led to the arrest of Fifee, who allegedly threw a parcel over the southern fence of the prison. It contained cigarettes, a cellphone, a charger and rolling papers.

Samuels said Fifee was previously remanded on a robbery charge. However, he was released on bail just over two months ago.

Fifee will be processed by the police, who have since launched an investigation.

Officials at the prison have been on high alert following the recent escape of two prisoners, including two murder accused.
