A convicted prisoner was recaptured within minutes after he escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison yesterday morning.

Stabroek News was told that the prisoner, Rei Joseph, made his escape shortly before 7 am, when he scaled the fence.

However, after ranks in the towers noticed the prisoner, the prison’s Task Force was informed.

The ranks quickly recaptured the prisoner in the Smithfield Area around 7.10 am.

An investigation has been launched and the prisoner is now expected to face a charge for his escape.

Joseph was serving a 15-month sentence after he was convicted for simple larceny.

He was expected to be released on December 11, this year.
