Following a lengthy hiatus of nearly 16 months, Dwayne Lindie, recent recruit of emerging heavyweight Guyana Police Force (GPF), disclosed that his decision to leave Fruta Conquerors was based on the lack of importance displayed by the Tucville-based club in his football ability.

This was disclosed during an exclusive interview, the first since his unexpected move, with Stabroek Sport yesterday.

According to the central midfielder, “It’s hard to stay away from something you truly love. I came back for a new challenge but the reason I left Fruta, which is the number one team in the country currently is because they didn’t value me as a player when I was playing for them.”

Lindie transferred to the lawmen during the recently concluded January transfer period, ending more than a decade of association with the Tucville based institution, who are currently the two time defending Elite League champion.

He further stated, “It was very hard to leave my beloved team. Fruta Conquerors is one of the clubs I truly love. I got a lot of memories, experiences and titles playing under Fruta Conquerors. I learnt almost everything I know from Fruta. I think it would be hard for any player to leave a club that they played with for over a decade. I only played for 3 teams in my career, Thomas United which I played from 5-10 years old, Fruta Conquerors 10-24 years old and now the GPF.”

Asked about the expectations for his new team, Lindie who has been capped once by the Golden Jaguars senior program, said, “Well my expectations for GPF is to win championships by hard work and dedication.”

Lindie who has recently returned to the sport following a lengthy hiatus, stated that the current situation has tremendously hampered his return, adding, “It’s affecting me in a huge way mentally and physically. It’s really frustrating, I started training in January and had the chance to meet the coaches and players but training stopped in the ending of February due to the elections and Covid-19.”

According to Lindie, the decision to return was based on the desire to compete in the sport he loves. He added that attempts to maintain a fitness base has been difficult due to the unavailability of facilities, stating, “Well it’s hard to train because there no facilities open due the pandemic situation but I’m still trying to keep fit by doing some pull-up, push up, squats and crunches.”

Lindie further stated, “I also want to remind the public that the greatest gift is life, so please adhere the WHO and the Ministry of Public health to get this Covid-19 disease under control.”
