Only one of the twelve juveniles who escaped from the Sophia detention centre earlier this month remains on the run while the others are being held at the Kitty Police station while investigations continue.

The Regional Commander Superintendent Philip Azore told Stabroek News recently that 11 of the juveniles who reportedly assaulted two police officers before escaping the Sophia Juvenile Holding Centre were safely recaptured but a search still continues for the last teen.

“They [the 11 recaptured teens] are in housed at Kitty Police Station until the Juvenile Holding Centre itself is properly fortified, before we take them back [there]. Presently a Civilian Observer investigation is ongoing,” Azore explained.

Five of the juveniles were found hiding together at a house at ‘E’ Field Sophia on May 5, just a day after the escape. Another six were recaptured sometime later.

Azore assured that the police are still looking for the remaining escapee. He also said that at the moment a decision is not set on what penalties the escapees will face adding that that determination will be made following investigations.
