A 19-year-old Bartica miner died on Tuesday, days after he allegedly sustained injuries during a football game at Armu Backdam, Cuyuni Backdam in Region Seven.

Dead is Rickford Newton, a resident of Byderabo Road, Bartica.

Stabroek News understands that around 1pm last Friday, Newton and other miners were playing football when it is claimed that he jumped to receive the ball and injured himself.

Newton was escorted to the Bartica Hospital, where he was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). While there, an MRI showed that he had suffered a fractured skull, neck, and hand. He succumbed around 3pm on Tuesday.

An autopsy yesterday revealed that Newton died as a result of a fractured spine.

A police investigation is ongoing. Stabroek News was told that a team of ranks was yesterday dispatched to the scene.
