Body of Venezuelan youth retrieved from Cuyuni River

The body of the Venezuelan youth who had gone missing after he fell overboard into the Cuyuni River on Monday has been retrieved.

Police had previously identified the youth only as “Bryan” and gave his age as 19. Up to yesterday, when his body was found around 11 am, he was still to be properly identified.

The body was discovered by a boatman who was passing through in the same part of the river where his body was said to have gone under.

According to a police report made on the day of his disappearance, Bryan had at around 10.30am that morning asked a Lake Mainstay boat captain for a drop to Devil’s Hole on the Cuyuni River. The boat captain was scheduled to transport fuel to the area.

The boat was loaded with 45 drums of gasoline and at the time of the accident the youth was sitting on a bucket atop of one of the drums. While travelling along the river near a place called ‘Two Point Backdam Landing’, the bucket slipped and the young man fell into the river.

It was said that one of five other passengers who had joined the boat prior to the incident jumped into the river to rescue him but his attempt proved futile.

The man’s body is currently at Lyken Funeral Home awaiting identification.
