Metallic utility poles on West Bank being replaced for safety reasons

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) yesterday said that metallic poles with street lights between La Grange and Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara are being removed from near to a GPL feeder because of the risk posed to maintenance crews.

MPI gave the explanation in a release following concerns raised on social media about the removal of the poles.

“The Ministry wishes to inform the residents between La Grange and Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, Region no. 3, that the Electrical Contractors are currently removing all metallic poles in close proximity to all of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) 13.8kV express feeder due to the risks this poses to the maintenance crews”, the release said.

It added that the lights are being reinstalled by Skytec Enterprise International Inc, Thomas Electrical Construction and Manufacturing and JJ Electrical Contracting Service over a period of ten days and works are expected to conclude on the 22nd of July, 2020. According to the contracts, the release said that contractors are required to re-establish highway lighting networks using GPL’s wooden lantern poles.

“The Electrical Department therefore condemns all social media posts that seeks to defame the name of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s Electrical Department”, the release added.
