ERC addressing ‘plethora’ of racial incitement complaints

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has said it continues to receive a “plethora” of complaints of racially insensitive and inciting material, particularly from social media, targeting individuals, politicians and political parties.

In a release on Friday, the ERC acknowledged that although its capacity has been “unavoidably reduced” due to adherence to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions, it will continue to work towards assessing and investigating complaints “in a timeframe within the context noted.”

The Commission said that while fully aware “of the devastating impact these incidents which incite hate and violence have on the further widening of division among the ethnic groups and the need for investigations to be completed swiftly,” it asks the public to be patient and assures that it will make every effort to have these complaints resolved as soon as is possible.

The ERC expressed regret at not being able to conceal its disappointment that such attempts to divide the nation still continue openly despite its repeated calls for such activities to cease. It exhorted all those involved “including political leaders and their supporters to act in a more responsible manner in the interest of our dear nation.”
