A 40-year-old man died yesterday afternoon after a crash along the Montrose Public Road, on the East Coast of Demerara.

Dead is Trevor Mangal, of Lot 52 Industry Crown Dam, East Coast Demerara. He suffered severe injuries to his head. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accident occurred around 5.30pm.

The car in which Trevor Mangal was in collided with this van, GWW 6244, which slammed into several other vehicles

At the time, Mangal was the occupant of a car, PXX 2522. This newspaper was unable to ascertain the identity of the driver.

Sunday Stabroek understands that the car is alleged to have been speeding along the public road when it collided with a van, GWW 6244.

As a result of the collision, the van slammed into three other vehicles, which were parked in front a nearby tyre shop.

The van, which was driven by a resident of Sophia, was proceeding west along the northern lane of the southern carriageway of the public road when it is alleged that the car, PXX 2522, collided with it from the rear.

As a result, the driver of the van lost control and collided with another van, GLL 4062, a car PWW 6978, and a minibus, BYY 4486, which were parked along the southern parapet of the road.

After the car collided with van GWW 6244, it slammed into a light pole situated along the median. The car turned turtle before coming to a halt.

Mangal, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was in an unconscious state when he was pulled from the vehicle.

When Sunday Stabroek visited the scene of the accident yesterday, a large crowd, including relatives and friends of Mangal, had gathered. Many of them were seen consoling each other as they got a glimpse of Mangal’s body, which was lying on the roadway.

There was a buildup in traffic along the usually busy road as persons who were passing by stopped to get a glimpse of what was happening.

The driver of the van that was initially hit was visibly shaken.

The owner of minibus BYY 4486 told this newspaper that he was seated in front of the tyre shop, where he had stopped to get his tyre changed, when the accident occurred. “I telling yuh bai. I just done wuk and come here to change me tyre and look wah gone and happen,” the man said.

Persons who had gathered were heard calling for stricter measures to be implemented for road users. “They need to start take away some of them licences and so man. This thing like it will never stop. Look another one gone and dead because of speeding now,” the man said. (Sharda Bacchus)
