Waste-to-energy plant on the way in Barbados

(Barbados nation) Government is planning to build a $320 million, 25 megawatt waste-to-energy plant at Vaucluse, St Thomas.

This was revealed Tuesday by Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce Dwight Sutherland while introducing the Fair Trading Commission (Amendment) Bill 2020 and the Utilities Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2020 in the House of Assembly.

He said the proposed plant would be using 20 per cent local organic waste while 80 per cent would be imported.

The amended legislation gives the Fair Trading Commission regulatory oversight and the power to set rates for the renewable energy sector, and Sutherland said the commission was in the process of preparing a rate for biomass technology.
