More than a dozen ranks of the Guyana Police Force were placed under close arrest after they allegedly opened fire injuring two civilians during a high speed chase early Saturday morning.
The injured men are currently patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) nursing injuries to their backs.
The Guyana Police Force remains silent on the incident. Contacted today, Police Commander of Region 4A Phillip Azore refused to divulge any details to this newspaper. He noted that the incident was already reported in the media and he does not wish to get into the details.
However, sources told Stabroek News that the police went to an East Bank of Demerara location where the two injured men and two others were imbibing.
The two men now in hospital reportedly opened fire before leaving the location which prompted the police to chase after them. During the process, the police requested back up and were supported by other patrols.
Whilst in Georgetown, the men reportedly opened fire again at the police and it was at this point that the police were said to have fired back.
Minutes after, the chase ended on D’Urban Street and Mandela Avenue. No firearm was found in the civilians’ possession.
An investigation has since been launched into the incident. The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and are awaiting the results of ballistic tests to determine what exactly transpired.
