Cubans arrested after suspected backtrack entry

Police last night intercepted a bus that was transporting nine Cuban nationals at the Berbice Bridge entrance.

It is suspected that they entered Guyana from Suriname via the backtrack route located at the Number 79 Village, Corentyne foreshore.

Commander of ‘B’ Division Calvin Brutus confirmed the arrest of nine Cubans as well as a Guyanese driver and a Guyanese conductor travelling in a minibus, BSS 8772.

Brutus also said that two Cuban nationals were arrested at the Number 63 beach yesterday.

The two were held with their luggage and transported to Springlands Police Station, where they are being held.

According to a source, police have so far identified Scottsburg beach, Number 61 – 63 beach, Rose Hall, Nigg and Fyrish kokers as major illegal entry points depending on the tides.

Brutus last night said that it is extremely difficult for law enforcers to monitor all the points, which stretch from Scottsburg, Upper Corentyne, to Port Mourant, Central Corentyne.
