A Berbice mother is seeking an investigation after her newborn was discharged from the New Amsterdam Public Hospital with a gaping hole on his hand due to a suspected burn from a defective intravenous line which she was never made aware of.

Trishanna Ally, 23, of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, explained that she was admitted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital on Friday, August 7, after she showed signs of labour. She said that on the afternoon of the said day the doctor broke her water bag but a C Section was not done until Saturday, August 8th around 6 am.

After the C section, Ally who was unconscious after she lost a lot of blood, was taken to the Intensive Care Unit, while her son, Caleb, was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Ally said it wasn’t until Monday, August 10  that she was finally able to see her son. It was then she discovered that one of his hands was covered with a bandage while the other hand had a large spot. She immediately questioned the nurses and was told that her son had a reaction to the needles on both hands.

The first-time mother said that the medical professionals told her that it would heal and it was not something to worry about.

On Wednesday, August 12, she was discharged and after arriving home she decided to open the bandage to clean her son’s hand and it was then that she discovered the injury.

The young woman said that she and her husband then decided to take their son to a private clinic in Berbice where the doctor immediately admitted her son.

Ally explained that the doctor told her that her son had an infection and that the injury was from a burn. She said what was more worrying was that the doctor at the private clinic told her that if her son’s hand was left untreated then it could have led to the hand being amputated.

Ally then went back to the New Amsterdam Hospital and after questioning those present she was told that a faulty line was used which caused the medication to leak out and burn her son.

She said she requested a list of medications administered to her son but was told that there was no list.

She said it was upsetting not to be given proper information about her son’s injury before being discharged from the hospital.

According to the young woman, despite speaking out about the situation no senior medical professional in the region has reached out to her to offer any sort of clarity. “I would like an investigation because I need to know what exactly happened”, she said yesterday.
