Prison officer dies in accident on Homestretch Avenue

The Police say they are investigating a fatal accident which occurred about 08:00hrs today on Homestretch Avenue in the vicinity of the CANU Headquarters, involving motor car PYY 7942 driven by a 27-year-old Prison Officer, and motor X-Trail PWW 4425 driven by a 22-year-old male of Eccles, East Bank Demerara resulting in the death of Prince Cox, 38, a Chief Prison Officer of Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara.

A release from the police today said that inquiries disclosed that the motor car was proceeding west along the southern side of the road and the X-Trail was proceeding east along the northern side of the said road. As both vehicles were approaching the CANU Headquarters, the motor car while overtaking a line of vehicles ended up in the path of the X-trail.

The X-trail collided with the left side front door and fender of the motor car resulting in both drivers as well as occupants of the motor car,  Cox and a 22-year-old Prison Officer of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown suffering injuries about their bodies.

They were picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where Cox was pronounced dead. The drivers of both vehicles and the other occupant of the motor car were admitted at the said hospital and are receiving treatment.
