A Craig vendor was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the murder of Kishan Persaud, who died following a fatal chopping on Saturday.

Kendrick Shepherd, age 37, of Lot 79 2nd Street, Craig, East Bank Demerara, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman, at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until September 22, 2020.

Stabroek News had reported that just about 9:30 pm on Saturday, Persaud was driving his car, a white Corolla wagon, in an easterly direction along Busby Dam. As he was about to turn into First Street, Craig, he was confronted by a male who had his cart packed with fruits and vegetables, effectively blocking Persaud’s path.

Persaud then exited his vehicle and asked the suspect to move his cart to allow him to pass by, but the suspect refused to do so which resulted in an argument between the two men.

The police stated that the suspect then armed himself with a cutlass which was concealed in his cart and dealt Persaud a chop to the left side of his neck. He then made good his escape. After the injury, Persaud was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he died at about 10.30 pm while receiving treatment.

A party of policemen acting on information later went to the suspect’s address where he was arrested and taken to the Grove Police Station.
