Wayne Castello, the man wanted for murder among other offences, was yesterday charged with illegal possession of a gun and ammunition, along with discharging a loaded weapon at the police.

Castello called ‘Top Cat’, 27, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was remanded by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.

The charges read to him state that on August 27, 2020, at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Castello had in his possession, a 9mm pistol along with six rounds of matching ammunition when he is not a licenced firearm holder.

It was also alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he discharged a firearm at Police Officer Kester Cosbert with intent to maim, disfigure, or cause him actual bodily harm. He was not required to plead to the three charges and was subsequently remanded. The matter will be called again on September 23, this time before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty.

According to reports, on the day in question at about 8:05pm, police ranks were on mobile patrol along Genip Lane, East Ruimveldt when they saw Castello, who was wanted for the murder of 23-year-old Navindra Samaroo, committed on July 23, as well as a series of robberies.

Upon seeing the police approaching, Castello, with the use of a motorcycle, attempted to escape. However, the ranks exited the patrol vehicle and Castello allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire at them. The police returned fire and Castello was shot in one of his legs.

He was subsequently arrested and searched. The firearm and ammunition were found in his possession.
