Wounded body of Charity miner found wrapped up in hammock

The police are investigating the murder of a miner whose body was found wrapped in a hammock beside a tree at Puruni, Region 7.

According to a police press release, the body of Tyrone Thomas of Charity, Essequibo, was discovered by a 25-year-old resident of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara, who is the owner of the dredge he worked at.

The statement said that the murder occurred between September 1st and September 6th at Thomas Island, Puruni River. It stated that the owner had left Thomas with another worker, a Brazilian national, in the camp on August 16th and about a week later Thomas informed the owner that the Brazilian national had left the camp.

On September 5th the man, along with two other new workers went to the camp at Thomas Island and noticed that Thomas was not there. The following day at about 7 am, the owner detected a stench coming from the Puruni River, which is nearby the camp. The police said that the owner decided to investigate and observed that a body was wrapped in a multi-coloured hammock which was stuck beside a tree in the river. The man then discovered that it was Thomas.

When police ranks arrived at the scene, it was discovered that Thomas’ legs and hands were bound and a wound was seen above his right eye.

The body is currently at Bartica Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
